Obituary for John L. "Buddy" Lege

John L. “Buddy” Lege, 62, of North Apollo, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2016 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 30, 1953 in Natrona Heights, he was a son of Betty H. (Nuscis) Lege of Vandergrift, and the late John J. Lege.

John lived in the Kiski Valley all of his life, and was a 1971 graduate of Kiski Area High School.
He served our country with the United States Navy. John worked as an electrician for Joe Rametta Electric for many years, and was later employed as a parts manager for Charapp Ford in Natrona Heights, as a salesman for Key Lincoln in New Kensington, and for Sterling Auto Parts in New Kensington.

John was well known as “That Guy With The Birds”. He started rescuing parrots in the early 80’s, and after Sterling closed, John pursued his passion of bird rescue, education, and shows with great fervor. He developed an educational program to teach both young and old about birds from all over the world. John made appearances with his crew of rescued feathered friends not only locally, but nationally as well. He was a member of the American Federation of Aviculture, and volunteered at the National Avery in Pittsburgh for several years.

John was also a phenomenal musician, and played the banjo, accordion, guitar, and was a well-regarded drummer. He started with his father’s band, “The John Lege Combo” and later played as part of the Valaire’s, Magic, Elements, and his most well-known band, Easy Street. John also loved NASCAR (his favorite driver was David Pearson), and liked watching The 3 Stooges.

John’s contributions to the Kiski Valley with his many programs are immeasurable.

In addition to his father, John was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Lege.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 9 years, Milinda L. “Linda” (Mahaffey) Lege; daughters, Michele S. (Mark) Craig of Worthington, PA, Kayla Lege of Clarion; step daughter, Amanda (Brian) Blystone of Sarver; stepson, Matthew Kirkman; grandchildren, Gage & Cole; sister, Julie M. (Raymond) Carr of Vandergrift; brothers, Jesse F. (Barb) Lege of Vandergrift, Joseph J. Lege of Saxonburg; many nieces and nephews; close friend Deborah Pugsley of Avonmore; special friend & right hand man, Ken R. (Sue) Sprouse of Tarentum; and last but certainly not least, his beloved birds, Becca, Nikki, Marigold, and Poppy, who will remain at the Lege residence.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 2 to 4 & 6 to 9 p.m. in the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home, 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo. A Celebration Of John’s life will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Lora Kline officiating, and military honors accorded by the Armstrong County American Legion Honor Guard.
